ResearchED Birmingham
On Saturday 16th March, a group of staff from across the MAT attended the ResearchEd Birmingham conference. They joined over 500 education professionals from across the country, sharing best practice and learning from one another.
Our Teaching and Learning Professional Learning Partnership Lead, Chloe Sanders, proposed the CPD opportunity to LwLAT colleagues as she was invited to speak at the conference alongside fellow senior leader Amanda Doherty. They talked about 'how evidence informed practice is driving our SEND mission'.
They joined an excellent line-up of speakers, including Mary Myatt, Alex Quigley, Tom Sherrington and Christine Counsell. The opening key note speech was given by Tom Bennett, Director and Founder of Research Ed. One of our Assistant Principals shared the following:
Tom Bennet’s key note on behaviour was insightful and made me reflect on some of the key areas we have as a school in terms of teaching behaviour and building the correct environment and climate.

For many of our LwLat attendees it was their first time at the conference:
It was my first ResearchED event. It was great to hear about different experiences and stategies, I most looked forward to Alex Quigley and Tom Sherrington - through my teacher training all my CPD was around their research and strategies.

Throughout the day LwLAT staff enjoyed thought-provoking, research and evidence informed workshops on themes including curriculum, assessment, reading, CPD, behaviour & exclusions and habits. LwLAT staff shared the following with us:
My key take away was from the Behaviour Habits session by Shabnan Ahmed. Her ideas for instilling habits for behaviour for learning were so simple and clear and I liked her approach.

It was a good day to get training from people who are passionate in their fields. It was also useful to learn some tips that I could apply to my own teaching.
- Subject Leader
I really enjoyed it and came back with lots of ideas and takeaways. I most enjoyed Christine Counsell speak about the power of story in the curriculum.
